Marking and Placarding of Ballistic Parachute Recovery Systems on Single Seat Deregulated (SSDR) Aircraft

The AAIB has previously raised concerns regarding the significant hazard to emergency services and first responders from non-deployed Ballistic Parachute Recovery Systems (BPRS) in crashed aircraft. In response to this the CAA introduced new requirements to BCAR Section S, Sub-Section K for the marking and placarding of BPRS to warn emergency services and first responders of the risks posed by these devices. The CAA also published Mandatory Permit Directive (MPD) 2019-005 on this topic.

The CAA strongly recommends that owners of SSDRs fitted with a BPRS comply with the requirements of BCAR Section S, Sub-Section K, to clearly identify the presence of the BPRS to emergency services and first responders in the event of an accident
