Electrical powered sailplanes EASA Emergency AD 2017-0167-E

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued Emergency Airworthiness Directive (EAD) 2017-0167-E due to occurrences of fire in the front electric sustainer battery packs affecting  Glasflügel 304 eS, Discus-2c FES and LAK-17B FES powered sailplanes. This requires modification of the battery packs before next flight. Removal of the battery packs is an acceptable alternative method provided that flights without the installed battery pack are allowed for that powered sailplane.

The same battery pack is understood to be installed in other powered sailplanes, which are classified as Single Seat De-Regulated (SSDR). Owners and operators of powered sailplanes are advised to familiarise themselves with the EASA Emergency AD and consider appropriate action to be taken.
